Come and see us, live!
Tell the shopkeeper they're for your mum.
Cornershop Showdown is a fun, live parody gameshow set in 1976. Jake Yapp (Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe, BBC Radio 4, Dave) is your host, trying to hold the chaos together and dance on the tightrope of presenting 1970s content to a 2026 audience.
In 1976, of course, smoking was mandatory for anyone over 11, and so contestants compete to win 10p singles cigarettes, as used to be sold in your local cornershop, often to children, on the flimsy pretext that they were only buying them for their mum.
It's a fun, stupid, satirical escape from the woes of 2026.

Here's a nice review from Buxton:
JAKE YAPP: CORNERSHOP SHOWDOWN - Jake Yapp
Now, I’m not a huge fan of game shows, or even a fan really, but Cornershop Showdown was a fantastic way to start an evening! Hosted by Jake Yapp and his glamorous assistant Julie we were treated to a hoot from start to finish, with hardly a pause for breath!
The show is set in 1976, but a 1976 on steroids! It takes all the elements of your average 70s game show and boots them into overdrive. Tacky prizes nobody wants? Here you can almost win your weight in fags! Fags, fags, fags everywhere – your GP’s nightmare!
From the introductory song about Buxton – you must listen to it – you know you are in for a fun time. Our hosts are genial, welcoming and possibly in denial and with the help of a mass of audience participation it all moves along very nicely indeed. Special mention should be made of the on-stage participants Graham and Martin (selected by what looked like a nerf gun firing fags) who more than held their own for the majority of the show. Bravo chaps!
It was by turn eye-wateringly funny, cringe-inducing, memory provoking and bonkers! Each round was seemingly topping the previous including a round called ‘More or Less Tar’ and one featuring ‘The Bl*ck and Wh*te Minstrels (as a child I was taken to see the real thing and still carry the scars).
All of this is held together by Jake (loved the shoes) and Julie – who is rarely without a fag or drink in her hand – and it is one of the funniest shows I’ve seen at the Fringe in a while. I urge you to catch it this evening (18th) at Underground Springs and avoid the inevitable disappointing end to another World Cup. You’ll be so glad you did.
